neck pain

Maybe you overdid it at the gym. Perhaps you lifted something that was too heavy or moved your body the wrong way. Slipped on a patch of ice? Regardless of how it happened, life has literally become a pain on the neck. How do you know though, when the pain is serious and requires chiropractic treatment, or if you simply need to take it easy for a few days? The answer to this question is not always a simple one.

Normal Neck Pain That Resolves on Its Own

When you injure the muscles, other soft tissues, and vertebrae in your neck, you can expect some common problems such as minor pain and discomfort. These symptoms typically only last a few days to a week and are often relieved by applying ice or heat, in conjunction with a pain reliever like Advil or Tylenol. Sometimes, however, neck pain doesn’t get better on its own, or the symptoms are more severe and require chiropractic treatment.

Red Flags That Signal a Need for Treatment

If you experience any of the following red flags, you should seek treatment right away.

  • Numbness or weakness in your arms or legs
  • Inability to turn your head
  • Extreme pain or pain that becomes worse
  • Pain begins to spread
  • Muscle spasms
  • Pain that does not improve
  • If the injury was caused by trauma, such as from a car accident or fall

Your chiropractor will evaluate your neck pain and determine the best course of treatment for you. While you may only want to seek treatment for a more severe neck injury, it’s important that you don’t suffer needlessly. Your chiropractor can provide relief from minor neck pain as well, helping you feel better as you heal. Experiencing neck pain right now?
