DEMYSTIFYING CHIROPRACTIC CARE: IS CHIROPRACTIC CARE SAFE

We live in an age where information is literally at our fingertips. Smart phones and tablets stand ready to verify or debunk just about any myth. And yet, the myth that chiropractic care is somehow unsafe persists. The fact is that chiropractic care is very safe. It is, after all, a healthcare service provided by a doctor. So, let’s debunk the myths surrounding the safety of chiropractic care one by one.

MYTH #1: HIGHER STROKE RISK FOR OLDER PATIENTS

It was once believed that the risk of stroke for people 66-99 years old was higher following a visit to the chiropractor.  However, new studies have proven that this is not the case. In fact, the risk of stroke is about the same as if they had sought care from their regular doctor for their neck pain or headaches.

MYTH #2: CHIROPRACTOR CARE IS ALWAYS PAINFUL

For many people, having a chiropractor adjust his or her neck and spine causes no pain. However, some new patients do report feeling a bit stiff or sore after the first adjustment. This typically happens within 4 hours of treatment and usually lasts no longer than a day.

This type of discomfort is perfectly normal. These same patients often have no stiffness or soreness after the next visit, or much less than the first visit.

While pain is not a common side effect of chiropractic care, some common side effects a patient might experience are:

  • headache
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • tiredness
  • fatigue

Less than 10% of all patients report increasing headaches after treatment. Less than 5% suffer from the other side effects.

MYTH# 3: CHIROPRACTORS BREAK BONES

Breaking a bone during chiropractic treatment is not a common occurrence. However, a person’s age, overall health, and pre-existing conditions all have an effect on his or her chiropractic care. This is why it is very important to answer medical questions honestly before treatment begins.

For example, a person who suffers from osteoporosis, bone tumors, or other bone diseases has a higher risk of fracture during treatment. This is because the bones are more brittle and more likely to break under pressure. Healthy patients with no bone disease have an extremely low risk of fracture.

Let’s put the risks associated with chiropractic care into perspective. Chiropractors pay 10% less (on average) for malpractice premiums than regular doctors do. Chiropractic care is very safe for most patients. Patients with risk factors can be identified through a thorough evaluation before treatment begins.

At Brummert Family Chiropractic, we decrease risk by thoroughly evaluating each patient and performing a focused exam on the problem area. If we believe that treatment may put you at risk, we will recommend other treatment options. A referral to your regular doctor or a specialist may be required in some cases.
