Are you practicing good posture in the workplace and at home? If the answer is no, you are placing a lot of unnecessary stress on your body. In fact, you could be causing yourself pain as well as stiff, sore muscles. Here are 5 things you can do every day to help reduce stress and strain on your body.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO IMPROVE POSTURE:
- Stand up! If your job requires hours and hours of sitting, you are putting yourself at risk for circulation, muscular, and skeletal problems. This is especially true if you are not sitting up straight. To help combat this problem, practice good posture when sitting. Also, take breaks and stand up as often as you can. If your office allows, use a desk that can adjust to standing height to help get your on your feet instead of sitting all day long.
- Sit properly! You might think sitting on a chair properly is as easy as, well, just sitting down. However, that is not the case. To sit properly and reduce your risk of problems with your muscles and bones, you should sit up with your back straight. Your feet should be flat in the floor. Your thighs should be parallel to the floor, and your knees should not touch your chair.
- Mind your head! It is all too easy to cause yourself neck and shoulder pain, as well as headaches by craning your head into weird positions. Cradling a phone on your shoulder, spending a lot of time with your head bent down, or at an awkward angle places a great deal of pressure on your spine. Try to keep your head level, and move your keyboard or monitor to a position that allows you see well without bending your neck. Use a headset for calls if possible.
- Stretch! Stretching your muscles and body is important because it helps to relieve strain and stiffness. Shrugging your shoulders, stretching your arms and legs, twisting your torso, these are all great ways to rid your body of stiffness associated with sitting or standing for long periods of time.
- Keep it within reach! Whether you are sitting at your desk at work, or your own table at home, it is important to keep the things you need within arm’s reach. Excessive reaching puts a lot of stress on your shoulders, wrists, and elbows. By keeping everything you need right in front of you, you will not only be able to access things more quickly, but also reduce stress on your body at the same time.
